Autism Awareness Month

April is Autism Awareness Month!

Governor Paul LePage has signed a Proclamation that April 2012 shall be recognized as Autism Awareness Month in the State of Maine.

Autism is a developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. It is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain, and occurs in approximately one out of every 88 births. Autism is four times more prevalent in boys than girls and knows no racial, ethnic or social boundaries. Learn more about autism from the Autism Society of Maine (ASM).

There is a lot that you can do to bring Autism Awareness to your community, library, school, workplace and home. You can join with others and
attend an event, create a bulletin board in the community with an Autism Awareness Packet from ASM (includes poster, brochures, informational flyers), read a book to a class, host an event, wear an autism awareness ribbon, make a donation to ASM, and much more!
