Day on the Hill 2017 - Seizing Our Power, Fortifying Our Voice!
February 15-17, 2017!
Join Autism Society affiliate leaders, board members and volunteers from across the nation as we head to Capitol Hill to advocate for public policy that improves the lives of those impacted by autism.
Now is the time to educate incoming leadership about the critical issues that affect the autism community and the day-to-day challenges and triumphs faced by your state and local constituencies. Come and experience one-of-a-kind networking with thought leaders, disability advocates, board members and affiliate leaders from across the nation.
I will be traveling to Washington DC along with other affiliates across America to meet with our Senators and Representatives in Washington DC. We (affiliate leaders, families, individuals with autism) gather every February to talk about our concerns for our children, youth and adults with autism. This year especially we need to have our voices be heard on some very important changes coming.
First is the Federal Medicaid Block Grant. The Federal Government would give a onetime block grant to states and allow the state's to decide what program to put it towards. Some of the programs we have in place are in jeopardy of losing its funding. We don't know which ones, but we do know money needs to stay dedicated in programs and not allow the state to choose where it should go.
Second is I DEA - Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. We need to keep this in place. IDEA was originally enacted by Congress in 1975 to ensure that children with disabilities have the opportunity to receive a free appropriate public education, just like other children.
I'm looking to bring stories from Maine families and hand deliver them to Senator King, Senator Collins, Representative Poliquin and Representative Pingree. I have appointments set up to speak with each of them and encourage any family who wants their story heard to email it to me so I can make sure it gets into the hands of the Senators and Representatives we voted into office.
My email address is: firstname.lastname@example.org
If you're interested in joining us in Washington DC give me a call for more details, I would love to hear from you: 1-800-273-5200.
Hope to hear from you,
Cathy E. Dionne
